Center Responds to Moody’s Aadhaar Criticism with “Over A Billion Indians…”

1. In response to Moody’s Aadhaar criticism, the Center states that “Over A Billion Indians…”

The Centre vehemently denied Moody’s claims that service denials brought on by the Aadhaar system commonly affect manual laborers, especially those who work in hot, muggy regions.

In New Delhi: The Centre responded on Monday to concerns made by the international credit rating agency Moody’s that the usage of Aadhaar’s biometric technology in humid conditions is unreliable and that it poses hazards to privacy and security.

Moody’s assertions that the Aadhaar system regularly results in service denials, particularly for manual laborers in hot and humid areas, were vigorously denied by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

“A particular investing service has made broad accusations against Aadhaar, the most trusted digital ID in the world, without providing any supporting data or rationale. Over the past ten years, more than a billion Indians have demonstrated their belief in Aadhaar by using it more than 100 billion times to authenticate themselves. It would indicate that the users do not comprehend what is in their own interests to reject such an unparalleled vote of confidence in an identity system, the government stated in a statement.

The statement also noted that Aadhaar has received acclaim from international organizations like the IMF and the World Bank, and that several nations have contacted the UIDAI to learn how to build similar digital ID systems.

In its study, Moody’s issued a warning that users face security and privacy threats from centralized systems that have a single point of control over users’ identifying credentials and access to internet resources.

The paper in question does not mention any primary, secondary, or independent research to back up the conclusions it makes. The investor service made no attempt to gather information about the facts surrounding the concerns highlighted with reference to UIDAI. The UIDAI is the subject of the report’s lone reference, which refers to its website, according to the government’s statement.

The government claimed that Moody’s analysis omitted the possibility of contactless biometric submissions, such as face and iris identification.

Additionally, there are several use situations where mobile OTP is a choice. A centralised Aadhaar system has security and privacy flaws, according to the research. The factual situation in this regard has been repeatedly provided in response to enquiries from Parliament, and Parliament has been explicitly assured that up till this point, no breach from the Aadhaar database has been reported, according to the statement.

The administration claimed that employees do not require biometric authentication in order to receive payments under the program or to seed their Aadhaar numbers in the MGNREGS database.

The World Bank-prepared G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) document presented at the G20 Summit in New Delhi earlier this month praised the transformative effects of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in India over the previous ten years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
