Chinese cab driver in Singapore assaults a woman after believing she is Indian: Report

Upon thinking the victim was Indian, a Chinese cab driver in Singapore beats her: Report

The Straits Times said on Sunday that the woman was riding with her daughter, who is nine years old.

Singapore: Due to incorrect information about the destination and the assumption that the mother and her daughter were of Indian descent, a Chinese cab driver in Singapore is currently under investigation for abusing them.
The abuse from the cab driver on Saturday was described by Janelle Hoeden, 46, who is of Eurasian descent: “He said, “You are Indian, you are stupid.”

The woman was riding with her daughter, age 9, according to a Sunday story in The Straits Times.

Hoeden captured the heated conversation on her phone as it progressed.

Around 2:00 PM on Saturday, she made a ride-hailing reservation on the TADA app.

Hoeden claimed that everything went smoothly at first, and she was talking to her child while riding when the driver abruptly became irate because a section of the road was shut since a future MRT line was being built near the Pasir Ris housing area.

“He started shouting at me, saying that I gave him the wrong address and wrong directions,” she recalled.

The driver, a Chinese guy, is seen in the video accusing Hoeden’s daughter of standing at less than 1.35 meters tall. The footage was posted on her Facebook page and an account by a TikTok user, and was then reposted by alternative news site Wake Up Singapore.

Hoeden could be heard responding that the youngster was 1.37 meters tall after he continually claimed that her daughter was shorter than 1.35 meters. Then he referred to the girl as “very illegal”.

The height is thought to be for the protection of passengers who need child seats.

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), all cars in Singapore are required to carry booster seats or child restraints for passengers who are under 1.35 meters in height.

You are Indian, I’m Chinese, the driver yelled at the woman while driving. You are the worst kind of person. Hoeden told the driver that she was Singaporean Eurasian, not Indian, and corrected him. Most Eurasians have tans, and occasionally they have an Indian appearance.

Hoeden was described in the Singapore broadsheet as saying, “As he was verbally abusive, I was afraid that he would start getting physical with me, so I told her to record.”

Whether I had tanned skin, Indian ancestry, or not, she argued that what he said was improper and that his use of the race card was utterly inappropriate.

After the incident, her toddler was also traumatized.

Tada Singapore stated that it was looking into the event in comments on ‘Wake Up Singapore’s’ Instagram post highlighting it.

“At Tada, we do not allow abuse, racism, or any form of prejudice. Our group is looking into this problem. We appreciate everyone who alerted us to this, the comment read.

A Tada representative also confirmed to The Straits Times that the company was aware of the issue.

“Comments or remarks that imply racial differences directly violate Tada community guidelines and are not indicative of the values of our company,” she declared.

“We have launched an internal investigation to fully comprehend the circumstances, and based on our findings, we will take all necessary actions,” the statement reads. She continued by saying that Tada is committed to swiftly and fairly resolving the issue and that it does not, under any circumstances, condone racial insults or remarks.

According to The Straits Times newspaper, among the Indians charged were Melvinder Singh Gurmit Singh, 31, Hardiran Singh Randhawa, 29, and doctor Dheeraj Prem Khiatani, 35.

Along with them, Butt Muhammad Abdullah, a Singaporean of Pakistani descent, and two Singaporeans of Chinese descent, Wang Shitao, 49, and Spencer Tan Peng Chua, 58, were also charged.

Khiaitani, a director of a number of companies, including Stark Medical Innovations, was accused of assaulting a lady on June 25 at Singapore’s famous hotel Marina Bay Sands. The court hearing on Friday resulted in an adjournment of his case until October 25, according to the article.

Randhawa is also charged with sexually assaulting a 30-year-old woman. In court filings, information concerning the alleged crime’s location has been redacted.
